What Are You Doing New Year’s Eve?
Traditional New Year’s Eve parties and shows may be off the table this year, but you can still celebrate the end of 2020 with some great live music.
Houston Person and Samara Joy will be joining Emmet Cohen and his trio (Russell Hall and Kyle Poole) for a concert from Dizzy’s in NYC, starting at 7:30pm ET on December 31. Guests of The Jazz Cruise know Houston and Emmet very well, but may not be familiar with Ms. Joy, a gifted young singer who won the prestigious Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition last year.
Put some champagne on ice and enjoy these talented artists for the last show of 2020, an unforgettable year we’d all like to forget.
Entertainment Cruise Productions goes back a long way with JazzTimes, to more than 20 years ago when The Jazz Cruise first sailed. The magazine, which began as a newsprint circular in Ira Sabin’s Washington, D.C. record store, goes back 30 years further and is now celebrating its 50th anniversary.
In its December 2020 issue, JazzTimes traces the development of both itself and the music over five decades. Among the anniversary-related features are a selection of artist-to-artist interviews from the magazine’s archives, including chats between Joshua Redman and Sonny Rollins, Christian McBride and Lou Donaldson, Renee Rosnes and Geri Allen, and more; a compilation of Before & After listening sessions with some of jazz’s top female artists; an Artist’s Choice playlist of tracks from 1970; and two lists of the top 50 jazz albums of the past 50 years. This very special issue also features a tribute to early jazz singer Cliff “Ukulele Ike” Edwards by Steely Dan’s Donald Fagen, a close examination of Peggy Lee’s 1953 album Black Coffee, and an exploration of the warm but awkward relationship between Miles Davis and Prince in the 1980s and ’90s.
